How to play

Every day, 5 questions about matches, stadiums, clubs and players. You drop your pin where it happened. The closer your pin is to the right spot, the more points you score.

A round

  1. Drop your pin. The map starts over the country or region in question. It only shows countries and borders, no cities: you have to know where it is. Tap the map to drop your pin. Tap somewhere else and it moves with you.
  2. Lock it in. Only now is it scored. You see the right spot, the distance, your points, the story behind it and the source.
  3. Full time. After 5 questions your score is final, along with your position among everyone who played today. On WhatsApp you only share your score and position, never the locations. That way your mates can play the round for themselves afterwards.

Points

We measure the straight-line distance between your pin and the right spot. Each question is worth up to 100 points. Close to the target every kilometre costs a lot; further out it levels off, so one howler doesn't cost you the whole round. For questions in Europe or around the world we're more generous:

PointsIn one countryEuropeWorld
100up to 1 kmup to 3 kmup to 6 km
90up to 12 kmup to 29 kmup to 70 km
75up to 34 kmup to 86 kmup to 205 km
50up to 102 kmup to 255 kmup to 612 km
25up to 308 kmup to 770 kmup to 1,849 km

The last questions count for more

The further the round goes, the more a good guess is worth. That keeps it tense right to the last question, and a slow start can still be turned round:

Question 1Question 2Question 3Question 4Question 5Day max.

If two players finish level on points, whoever was fewer kilometres out in total comes out on top.

Here's how that looks for questions in England, before the multiplier:

The colours

In the result, at full time and when you share, a colour shows how good each guess was:

Right area50 to 89 points
Wide1 to 49 points
Way off0 points

When you share, each question shows up as a colour, so your result gives nothing away. For example: 🟢🟢🟡🔴⚫️

Timed round

Alongside the daily round there's a free timed round every day with 5 different questions. You have 30 seconds per question, reading time included. The clock only starts when you tap to begin, and only then do you see the clue. Accuracy is worth up to 100 points as always, and your speed multiplies it:

Guess afterSpeed100 becomes
up to 20 seconds×1.5150
22.5 seconds×1.25125
25 seconds×1100
27.5 seconds×0.7575
30 seconds×0.550

If the clock runs out, your pin is scored where it stands, at ×0.5. No pin, no points for that question. The most you can score is 750 points, so 150 per question. The timed round has its own daily table. If points are level, whoever was quicker overall wins.

Streak

Your streak counts the days in a row on which you've finished the daily round. The timed round and playing together don't count.

Streak Shield: once every 7 days you're allowed to miss a day. Miss a day and play again the next, and your streak carries on. Miss two days in a row, or if the Streak Shield has already been used this week, and it starts again from one. The fixtures show whether your Streak Shield is ready.

Daily tasks and badges

Every day there are three challenges, the same for everyone: one for the daily round, one for the timed round and one you can complete in either, such as “Land a guess within 25 km today”. Only the two free rounds of the day count, so everyone has the same chance. Complete all three and it's a perfect matchday.

You earn badges for your streak and for challenges:

FAQs

When are there new questions?

A new daily round kicks off at midnight German time, which is 11pm in the UK. Everyone gets the same 5 questions on the same day, so you can compare scores straight away.

Why do old matches come up?

The questions cover more than 100 years of football history. Not everyone knows the older games, so the daily round and the timed round each have at most one classic from before 1990. You'll see “Classic” above the question, and in the daily round it's always question 3, which counts double.

Can I play the daily round again?

No, every question is scored exactly once. If you reload in the middle of a round, you pick up at the next open question. In the timed round the clock keeps ticking while you do. After full time, the fixtures show your result until the next round kicks off.

Do I need an account?

No, there's nothing to sign up for: you just play. Your progress and your streak are saved in this browser, so if you clear your cookies or switch device, you start from scratch.

Why doesn't the map show any cities?

GeoFootballer tests whether you know where something is. With place names on the map, you'd only have to find the city. Country names, borders and big rivers stay on so you can get your bearings.

How does the streak work?

Your streak counts the days in a row on which you've finished the daily round. The timed round and playing together don't count. Miss a day and it starts again from one, unless your Streak Shield steps in: once every 7 days it covers a missed day, as long as you play the day after.

What are daily tasks and badges?

Every day you get three daily tasks, such as scoring 600 points in the daily round or landing a green guess in under 10 seconds in the timed round. Do them and you collect badges: for long streaks, for the number of tasks you've done and for perfect matchdays, when you tick off all three in one day. Your badges are on your profile.

What's a duel?

Once you've finished the daily round, tap “Challenge your mates”: your friends get a link with your score and play the same daily round. Most points wins; if it's level, the kilometres decide. They can take you on until the next round kicks off, and the duel table stays up for a week after that. Duels are free and don't need an account.

Can we play together on one phone?

Yes, with “Play together”: for each question, you take turns placing your own pin in secret, then pass the phone on. The reveal shows every pin on the map in its own colour, and at the end there's a table with a winner. It's free for two players. In the daily round, only the pin of the phone's owner counts officially; the other player's pins stay on the phone and aren't saved. The timed round is solo only. More on Play together.

What are country questions?

Some questions aren't after a stadium or a city but a whole country, for example: “Which other nation could this player have played for?” If your pin lands anywhere in that country, you get full points. Otherwise it's the distance to the border that counts. In the reveal, the country lights up.

Does the stadium count or the city?

What counts is the place named in the reveal: for many questions that's a stadium, for birthplaces it's the city. Anything up to 1 km away is a bullseye, and up to 12 km you still get at least 90 points. So the right city gets you almost all the points.

Where do the questions come from?

We write every question ourselves. The facts come from public sources such as Wikipedia, Wikidata and openfootball, and the source is shown in every reveal.

Is GeoFootballer linked to any clubs or associations?

No. GeoFootballer is an independent fan project. Club and competition names are only there to describe what happened. We don't use logos or crests.

Is GeoFootballer a betting game?

No. GeoFootballer is purely a knowledge game: no stakes, no odds and no cash prizes, and points have no monetary value. We don't work with betting or gambling companies.

Are there ads?

No, GeoFootballer doesn't show any ads. The daily round and the timed round are free.

Where does the map come from?

Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, map tiles from OpenFreeMap based on OpenMapTiles. The country borders for country questions come from Natural Earth (public domain).
